The New York Giants have signed WR Victor Cruz to a 5 year, $43 million extension on his current contract. The extension is reportedly in addition to the one year, $2.8 million free agent contract that Cruz officially signed only a few weeks ago.
Only a few days after being traded from the Boston Bruins, RW Tyler Seguin is already making waves for his new team, the Dallas Stars. The team leadership has condemned an unfortunate tweet that originated from Seguin’s account that stated: Only steers and queers in Texas, and I’m not a cow.
The official response from the Dallas Stars: “In no way, shape or form does the Dallas Stars organization condone or agree with the message that was sent out through Tyler Seguin’s Twitter feed last night. We’ve addressed the issue directly with Tyler and we’ll continue to work on educating our players regarding the importance of their conduct on all forms of social media.”
Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic in three sets (6-4, 7-5, 6-4) to win the Gentlemen’s Singles tournament at Wimbledon, the first Briton to claim the title in 77 years.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
Chris Weidman defeated Anderson Silva in the second round of the main event at UFC 162, becoming the new middleweight champion and ending Silva’s seven year reign atop the UFC as well as ending his 17 fight winning streak.
Butler University has promoted assistant coach Brandon Miller to the role of head coach, filling the vacancy left by former head coach Brad Stevens, who announced earlier this week that he was leaving Indianapolis to coach the NBA Boston Celtics.
Said Butler Athletic Director Barry Collier, “As a player, assistant coach and person, Brandon has exemplified the Butler Way and brings a blend of energy, talent and integrity to this role.With Brandon’s leadership, Butler is well positioned to expand upon the success of the last few years.”
The Minnesota Wild have traded RW Devin Setoguchi to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a 2nd round draft pick. Setoguchi had 13 goals and 14 assists last season, a long way from the 65 goals he scored in the 2008-2009 season.
Big announcements in the NHL offseason on Friday, each one bigger than the last
- C Mike Ribeiro signed a 4 year, $22 million contract with the Phoenix Coyotes. Ribeiro played 2012 with the Washington Capitals but became an unrestricted free agent on July 2.
- RW Nathan Horton signed a 7 year, $37.1 million contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Horton spent the past three seasons with the Boston Bruins
- Team Captain Daniel Alfredsson (pictured) decided to leave the Ottawa Senators after 17 years, sending shock waves throughout the hockey world by signing a 1 year, $5.5 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings. At the end of the 2012-2013 seasons, there was speculation that Alfredsson might retire, but on June 28, Ottawa GM Bryan Murray stated that he had been informed by Alfredsson’s agent that Alfredsson “is committed to play next year for the Senators.”

Ethiopia forfeited a win and was penalized with a three-point deduction by FIFA on Monday after it was ruled they fielded an ineligible player in their June 8 game against Botswana. The forfeiture tightens the rankings in Group A - the winner of Group A and the other 9 groups will advance to Round Three, determining which 5 teams will represent the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil

The Boston Celtics announced the hiring of new head coach Brad Stevens. Stevens previously coached at Butler University. The contract with Boston is reportedly for six years, paying $22 million. He coached the Butler Bulldogs for six seasons, amassing a 166-49 overall record.
"Though he is young, I see Brad as a great leader who leads with impeccable character and a strong work ethic," said General Manager Danny Ainge.
San Antonio Spurs Manu Ginobili has signed a contract to return to the division-winning team for another two seasons. The final numbers are not yet known, but it is widely suspected that Ginobili will be taking a significant pay cut from his previous salary, a reflection of his growing inconsistancy has he approaches his inevitable retirement.
Bill Haas broke away from the pack and won the AT&T National on Sunday. Haas has now one at least one PGA Tour event each of the last four years, joining Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose
Matt Kenseth won the Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway this weekend, eding Jimmie Johnson. It was Kenseth’s fourth victory this season, more than any other driver.
In March, New York Giants Defensive Tackle Shaun Rogers reported the theft of over $400,000 in jewelry from a hotel safe in Miami. Over the weekend, New York State police say they have arrested a woman wanted to a string of high-end jewelry thefts in Florida, she may be linked to Rogers’ case.
Former major league pitcher Justin Miller was found dead early Saturday. Miller pitched professionally for fifteen years, including seven years in the majors. He compiled a record of 24-14 and a lifetime ERA of 4.82. He was one of the first pitches to have his arms covered in tattoos, which led MLB to require him to wear long sleeves when pitching after batters complained the tattoos were distracting. Miller was 35 years old.
